Understanding of Formats

i) Betamax
Betamax cassettes are actually smaller than VHS cassettes. Many engineers believe that Betamax offers better image quality than VHS as a technology. This having been said, greater wear occurs on a Betamax tapes compared to VHS therefore shortening the lifespan of the cassette. Additionally, Betamax has less capacity (recording time) than VHS cassettes. As early as 1993, Betamax was essentially obsolete among consumers in the United States.

ii) U-Matic - Low Band and High Band
Designed in the late sixties U-matic format was the fore-runner to home video formats.

Unlike Betamax format which followed, the spools of U-matic rotate in the same direction. It was intended for professional use and therefore included extra functionality as standard. It used 3/4 inch wide tape. The actual video cassette size is large and the running times are are low compared to domestic formats. This having been said the stability and robustness of the format are so high.

iii) Betacam SP
Betacam is high capacity videotape. It has magnetic tape that's half an inch wide, spooled within cartridges that are in two different sizes.

This format is used for both professional & personal use. For many years it evolved as the professional video recording and storage format of choice. Digital Betacam remained in wide circulation for a long time in video broadcasting and post-production.

Introduced by Sony in 1982, Betacam gave camera operators the advantageous ability to play back recorded video in colour, whilst previous video formats could only display black and white playback by comparison.
