Happy Clients Include:

How much recorded sound can a reel-to-reel tape hold?
Sorry. That is not so easy question to answer. Reel-to-reel tape decks did not have just one speed like compact cassettes. They could be played at a wide range of speeds from 1-3/8 inches per second, 3/34 inches per second 7 1/2 inches per second and more.

Additionally, there was many different sized reels. From 3" to 10.5" diametre in fact - Each size up holding more tape.

On top of all this, there was another factor - the thickness of tape. Some manufacturers made very very thin reel-to-reel tape and went on about how much more you get for your money.

Others did the reverse (made the tape thicker) and also boasted about the quality. Then - there were different ways a reel-to-reel tape could have been recorded: Mono, stereo or four track mono or a combination of stereo / four track mono.

Reel-to-reel tape also has sides. Side 1 and Side 2. On top of this they have tracks (Left/Right Side 1 and Left/Right Side 2. Your relative for example could have recorded on the left and right together for stereo recordings, or used left and right separately for 4 track mono!

In summary then, this is why we just ask you to initially send your material to us and we'll give you a no obligation once we've had a look.

Note: Reel to Reel Durations: Tape Durations can be quite difficult to predict if you can't remember much about the content! Each step-change of recording speed will actually double or halve the duration. A four track tape can for example be twice as long as a two-track tape.

Some tapes are recorded on one side only, some on both sides. A standard 7" spool of stereo 2-track material recorded at 15 IPS might contain as little as 15 minutes of audio, but the very same tape recorded across four mono tracks at 1 7/8 IPS might contain over 8 hours of audio! This makes it jolly difficult to guess in advance quite how much is on the tape.

(Prices include VAT. P&P free for all orders over £95. No Upfront Payment at all required. We can often provide a discount on greater quantities. Minimum Order Value: £20 inc vat. Call us on Freephone 0800 690 6160.
Reel to Reel Explained:
For home use, more basic reel-to-reel recorders were available, and a number of track formats and tape speeds were introduced to allow interoperability and prerecorded music. The first prerecorded R To R Tapes were introduced by RCA Victor Record Co. in 1954. Reel to reel was still very popular through to the end of the 1970s, despite the compact cassette, mostly because of the superior quality of open reel recordings. Many Audiophiles are willing to accept the relative ‘difficulty’ of open reel tape to gain better quality reproduction. As a generalisation, the faster the speed the better the sound quality.

In addition to faithfully recording higher frequencies and increasing the magnetic signal strength and therefore the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), higher tape speeds spread the signal longitudinally over more tape area, reducing the effects of defects in or damage to the medium.
Slower speeds conserve tape and are useful in applications where sound quality is not critical – such as speech in domestic recordings.

11 7/8 in/s or 4.76 cm/s — This is usually the slowest domestic speed, best for long duration speech recordings. It was used since it was very economical too!
3¾ in/s or 9.52 cm/s — a common domestic speed and used on most single-speed domestic machines, reasonable quality for speech.
7½ in/s or 19.05 cm/s — This was the highest domestic speed and also the slowest professional speed as a guide.
15 in/s or 38.1 cm/s — This was mainly used for professional music recording and radio programming.
30 in/s or 76.2 cm/s — This was used where the best possible treble response is demanded.
Speed units of inches per second or in/s are also abbreviated IPS. 3¾ in/s and 7½ in/s are the speeds that were used for the vast majority of the general consumer market releases of commercial recordings on reel-to-reel tape
