DIY Editing

DIY Editing of Your Home Movie Conversion - Take Complete Control!
Due to the huge increase in customers looking to take greater control over their material, we are often asked for an additional edit friendly version, via video to avi , video to quicktime, camcorder to dvd or vhs to dvd transfers. To assist those customers aiming to go down this road, we have produced a free guide to editing which our customers have found both useful and time saving!

In most cases, people are keen to perform simple tasks such as the re-ordering of their material and the removal of unwanted elements. If you request an edit friendly version to be supplied, you'll be able to perform these tasks, and many more besides, once you've enjoyed the benefits of our telecine services.

The History and Evolution of Common Video Formats

A VHS cassette holds at most about 430 m (1,410 ft.) of tape at the smallest satisfactory tape thickness, resulting in a maximum playback duration of about 4 hours in an DF480 for NTSC and five hours in an E-300 for PAL at "standard play" (SP) quality. Other velocities include "long play" (LP), and "extended play" (EP) or "super long play" (SLP).

For the American format, longer durations double and triple the recording time, but these velocity decreases cause a slight worsening in video quality – from the standard 250 lines in SP, to 230 analog lines horizontally. The slower velocities lead to an obvious reduction in sound track quality also, as the linear tape speed ends up much less than what is normally seen as a satisfactory minimum for audio recording.

Both NTSC and PAL/SECAM VHS tapes are physically indistinguishable. Nevertheless, as tape velocities vary between NTSC and PAL/SECAM, the playing time for any particular cassette will change accordingly between the systems. With the view of obviating confusion, manufacturers show the playing time in minutes that can be hoped for in the market (US, Europe, etc) the tape is distributed in. It is perfectly manageable to capture and play back a blank T-XXX tape in a PAL machine or a blank E-XXX tape in an NTSC machine, but the resulting playing time will not be the same as that indicated.
